Desi Sawaari / The Auto Project

Typically, the process for any design project starts with identifying a problem around us, then finding a solution for it and eventually finding a suitable medium to carry the message to our target audience.

This project however started with identifying a medium which in my opinion was untapped and had the potential to become a thriving medium of communication.

Auto-rickshaws are seen every where, they meander from the most plush streets to the lesser known back-lanes carrying backpacking foreigners, students, immigrant villagers, it has a wide range of audience.

Through the medium of this project I aimed to invite artistic and expressive minds of the city to make illustrations on socially relevant topics which would then be used as graphical narratives on the inside and outside of an auto-rickshaw - the national mode of transport.

Auto Theme 1: LGBT

Apart from the illustrations on the roof and seats of the auto, the translucent rainbow roof adds an element of fun by taking forward the idea of a digital filter to a real space. It renders the passengers in the colors of the Pride flag when the sunlight shines in, making it an interesting ‘selfie booth on the wheels’.

Using Auto Rickshaws as a medium of communication to start conversations on socially relevant subjects such as LGBT inclusivity, public urination etc by engaging the Artist Community to use the Auto Rickshaw hood as their canvas.
